From Magento to Shopify Plus: A Practical Migration Guide

Replatforming is one of the most consequential decisions an e-commerce leader can make. Done well, it clears the path for faster growth, leaner operations, and experiences that convert. Done without a plan, it creates disruption that can take months to recover from.

Datmos has guided enterprise and mid-market brands through platform migrations for 20 years - including both implementations on Adobe Commerce and migrations to Shopify Plus. As a Platinum Partner of Shopify, we bring a level of depth and access that directly benefits the brands we work with. This guide reflects what we've learned from both sides of that decision and is designed to show what a migration from Magento to Shopify Plus actually involves, what to protect, how to plan it, and what a realistic path forward looks like.

Why E-Commerce Brands Are Moving from Magento to Shopify

Magento (now Adobe Commerce) has powered complex e-commerce for many years, and for the right organization it remains a capable platform. The shift toward Shopify Plus tends to happen when operational realities or economics change.

The reasons we hear most consistently from brands evaluating the move:

  • The total cost of platform ownership has grown. Self-hosted Magento requires ongoing server management, security patching, and developer-led updates. Over time, that overhead competes with investment in actual growth.
  • The team is dependent on development resources for changes that should be faster. Updating content, launching promotions, or adjusting checkout flows often requires queuing a developer on Magento. Shopify Plus puts more of that control in the hands of marketing and merchandising.
  • The brand is scaling and wants a platform built to absorb that growth. Shopify Plus handles hosting, security, and uptime natively. It supports multi-region selling, B2B company accounts, and advanced automation without requiring custom-built solutions for each.

For B2B business specifically, Shopify Plus now includes native B2B capabilities, including company accounts, customer-specific pricing, and net payment terms, that previously required third-party extensions or substantial custom development.

What Actually Needs to Migrate

Before any technical work begins, a clear data inventory is essential. A complete migration scope covers:

  • Products. Products and catalog data, including SKUs, variants, descriptions, images, pricing, inventory, and category structure. Shopify supports up to 3 options and 2000 variants per product. Magento's configurable product model can exceed these limits, and catalogs with complex products need to be assessed before migration begins.
  • Customer records. Customer records, including names, email addresses, order associations, and account data. Customer passwords cannot be migrated due to platform encryption differences. A launch-day communication plan for password resets is a required component of every migration.
  • Order history. Order history migrates as read-only records. This preserves customer service context and analytics continuity without affecting live fulfillment workflows.
  • Content. Content and CMS pages, including blog posts, static pages, and metadata. Content that is still ranking in search should be treated as a business asset and prioritized in the migration plan.
  • Integrations. Third-party integrations. Every system connected to Magento needs its own migration track. ERPs, PIMs, CRMs, marketing platforms, and fulfillment systems do not move automatically. Each requires API reconnection and validation on the new platform.

The Migration Phases

A well-run migration follows a disciplined sequence. Compressing phases to meet an aggressive deadline is where most issues originate.

  1. Discovery and Audit
Document every integration, custom module, and active extension. Map your current URL structure. Audit catalog for variant complexity. Define scope accurately before any build begins.
  2. Design and UX/UI Review
Your Magento design likely will not translate well to a Shopify system. A new design, or a “refresh” will give the site a clean look and often will help conversion.
  3. Data Preparation and Mapping
Clean before migrating. Remove outdated products, reconcile inventory, and normalize product data. Define field mapping between Magento and Shopify structures for products, customers, orders, and metadata.
  4. Staging Build and Integration
Build and configure the Shopify Plus store in a staging environment. Import catalog and customer data, configure integrations, and develop or adapt the theme.
  5. QA and Launch Readiness
Test every critical path: checkout, account creation, search, filtering, payments, order confirmation, and email flows. Validate 301 redirects and integration accuracy. For B2B: test company account access and customer-specific pricing.
  6. Cutover and Post-Launch
Execute DNS cutover during a planned low-traffic window. Keep Magento in read-only state as a fallback reference. Monitor KPIs closely for the first 72 hours. The 30 to 60 days after launch are an active optimization period.

Protecting Your SEO

SEO is the area where migrations create the most risk if not addressed deliberately. Magento allows highly flexible URL structures; Shopify enforces a more standardized format, with product URLs following /products/ and category pages following /collections/. Without proper redirect mapping, every changed URL is a lost ranking signal.

A carefully planned migration is key to ensuring SEO is preserved. This includes 301 redirects, content moved, schema, metas (title/description) populated, image alt text, canonicals, and hreflang tags all implemented correctly. Also, ensure any PPC ads running are ready to be updated at launch to correct new URLs.

After launch, resubmit the updated sitemap in Google Search Console and monitor crawl errors and ranking performance for at least 60 days. Expect a drop in SEO after launch and prepare by adding more budget to PPC campaigns to compensate. A well-executed SEO planned migration should recover the site quickly, and can lead to stronger SEO when paired with faster page performance and a cleaner site architecture from the replatform.

Integration Strategy

For mid-market and enterprise brands, integration complexity is usually the primary driver of timeline and cost. Planning integrations in Phase 1 is not optional.

Each connected system needs its own migration track: confirm whether a native Shopify connector exists, evaluate API compatibility, and define the data flows that need to work correctly at cutover. Rebuilding integrations after launch is significantly more disruptive than planning them before it.

For CRM and marketing automation, tools like Bloomreach or Klaviyo integrate natively with Shopify's event model; syncing customer behavior, purchase data, and catalog in real time. This tends to be more direct and less configuration dependent than the extension-based connections required on Magento.

B2B integrations require particular attention. Customer-specific pricing, net payment terms, and company account structures all have Shopify Plus native equivalents. Mapping from Magento's customer group model to Shopify's B2B architecture requires careful configuration, and testing here should be thorough before launch.

What to Expect on Timeline

Timeline is driven by catalog size, integration count, custom module complexity, and whether the migration includes a redesign.

  1. Standard (under 5,000 products, limited customizations)
    Timeline: 16 to 24 weeks
Key Drivers: Clean catalog, standard integrations, limited custom modules
  2. Mid-market (moderate catalog, ERP integration, some custom functionality)
    Timeline: 24 to 32 weeks
Key Drivers: Integration complexity, catalog data prep, possible light redesign
  3. Enterprise (complex B2B, multiple storefronts, deep integrations)
    Timeline: 24+ weeks
Key Drivers: Custom B2B workflows, multi-store architecture, 10+ integrations

These timelines assume the brand is resourced to participate: reviewing designs, testing, managing approvals, and validating data. Migration is a shared effort, and the brand side of the work is as important as the technical execution.
